We’ve been hearing all month that this is National Cancer Prevention Month. WOOHOO! Wait? We can prevent prostate cancer? Please tell me how??? Well you could be like me and just not have a prostate (I joke with no intention to offend). Or you could accept the truth that there is nothing that will guarantee or absolutely prevent any cancer. If there was such a thing, there would be no need for further research.
So you’re telling me there is nothing to prevent cancer? Why bother then? Well before you jump off the healthy living bandwagon, let’s discuss what these healthy fruits and veggies really do for you. What do fruits do that are so amazing that they even get the occasional title of “anti-cancer super fruits?” “It comes down to this: Plants have less fat, more fiber, and more cancer-fighting nutrients. These three elements work together to support your immune system and help your body fight off cancer.”
They may not all have the best taste, but it shouldn’t be too hard to add a side of fruits and vegetables to every meal or at least one meal a day. Find what works best for you. Maybe it’s throwing blueberries on your cheerios in the morning or adding broccoli to your omelet. Whatever it is, it will only help your body out. “It’s important to remember that no single food or food component can protect you against cancer by itself. But strong evidence does show that a diet filled with a variety of plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans helps lower risk for many cancers.”2
